During pandemic, accompanying the rise in food costs, gasoline, childcare and housing costs, we have seen an unprecedented influx of new families’ need. In addition to these economic stressors, some government subsides granted to alleviate the impact of the pandemic had been canceled, worsening the financial situations for many. There appears to be no end in sight, and in order for these families to strive, more help for food is crucial.
We are proud to announce that besides volunteering initiatives at Foodbank, Feeding SanDiego, and Solution of Hope classes, the AYLUS San Diego Branch successfully organized the first Charity Sales event, which is aimed specifically to help the families in need as mentioned earlier on.
On August 13, 12 AYLUS San Diego volunteers gathered at Solana Ranch Park and sold used books which could be roughly classified into three categories: 1) Enrichment reading for 4-12 year olds ; 2) AP/SAT/Science Prep Material for high school students, and; 3) Music textbooks for beginners and intermediate students. Before the event, volunteers made the effort to collect books from a variety of sources, and some even handmade sweets & candies specifically for the event. We advertised for this sale on multiple social media platforms, including Instagram and WeChat. Overall, the Charity Sale event was met with great success in the community, with many parents and students stopping by to shop. 150+ books were sold with a total of $1000(Charity Sales+Company donation) was raised.
