On Tuesday, July 19th, members of the Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States of Pearland volunteered at the SMILE program at the Light and Salt Association. During this session, Alexander Sun taught Life Skills in the morning where they did a fun arm-untangling activity along with a game called “Minefield,” where they would guide a blindfolded teammate through a field littered with “mines” using vocal commands alone. This was a fun way and a good opportunity for students to practice teamwork and collaboration among peers. For Art class, Alexander Sun taught various methods of shading with a pencil and taught students how to sketch.
On Wednesday, July 20th, members of the AYLUS volunteered at the SMILE program at the Light and Salt Association. In the morning, the students and the Aylus volunteers participated in a quick workout led by a faculty member of the LSA. In the afternoon, William Sun taught us how to make snowflakes and Chinese symbols by folding paper in a specific way and cutting out a pre-set pattern.
On Friday, July 22nd, members of AYLUS volunteered at the SMILE program at the Light and Salt Association from. During this session, members Derek Zhu and Marc Lu led the music class, where the students practiced and played their ukuleles while the volunteers assisted. They also learned how to make origami rabbits and birds from Erica Gao along with Iris Yang and Marc Lu who assisted her teaching near the end.
