On June 20th and 23rd, AYLUS Pearland members had the opportunity to participate in a clinical health program sponsored by the Light and Salt Association. The program's aim was to develop a curriculum for youth outreach activities in underserved communities that promotes healthy living styles and provides evidence-based cancer prevention interventions for underserved populations in Texas. The program was funded by CPRIT.
On June 20th, AYLUS Pearland members had the opportunity to discuss about nutrition and food additives in a clinical health program led by Dr. Zhang. Volunteers developed a presentation for community members on how to read nutrition facts labels and identify additives on the labels. In addition, they met with Vania King, a renowned and retired professional tennis player who is the Founder, President, and Executive Director of ServingUpHope. Volunteers discussed with Ms. King on how to work with underserved communities.
The second day of the program, June 23rd, started similarly with Dr. Zhang leading a discussion on digestive health. This was followed by a session on educating community members about Hepatitis B and C. Students had hands-on testing experience and documented the procedures. They also wrote a manual on how to educate community members about Hepatitis B and C and incentivize testing.
