On June 6th and June 9th, AYLUS Pearland members had the opportunity to participate in a clinical health program sponsored by the Light and Salt Association. The purpose of the program was to develop a curriculum for youth outreach activities in underserved communities that promotes healthy living styles. The program was funded by CPRIT and aimed to provide evidence-based cancer prevention interventions for underserved populations in Texas.
During the program, members were introduced to various types of cancer and taught basic health preservation and medical information. On the first day, volunteers had a discussion with Dr. Zhang about the importance of exercise and a balanced diet, with a focus on preventing certain diseases and other medical effects. Later that day, volunteers worked with Ms. Ellen and Ms. Megan to learn how to present information on breast cancer to the community. Students then developed an education brochure based on what they learned.
On the second day, the program continued with a discussion on digestive health, followed by education on cervical and colorectal cancer. Like the first day, the session ended with students creating brochures and curriculums on promoting digestive health and educating the community on cervical and colorectal cancer.
