On 11/28/21, AYLUS Manhasset helped with composting by adding more material to the compost bin as well as burning branches to create wood ash to make fertilizer.
First, members helped clean up the yard area by collecting dead leaves and putting them in bins. After around 3 bins were full, we started to help collect sticks to burn for fertilizer. There were many branches and had to be carefully piled on top of each other to make sure they didn’t fall out or accidentally set fire to the surroundings. Leaves were cleaned up around the site to ensure fire safety. Afterwards, when the branches were set fire to, all the members present stood around and watched the fire to ensure it wouldn’t get out of control and to put out the fire if there were any stray sparks. Since there was also smoke and ash, everyone stayed at a distance to avoid damage.
It took around 2-3 hours before all the wood and branches completely turned to wood ash and the fire was put out.
The members who participated were Loretta Liu (3 hrs), Matthew Yang (2 hrs), Benjamin yang (2 hrs) and Jocelyn Liu (2 hrs)
