AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (8/8/2021, #47)

On 8/8/2021, members of the Syosset AYLUS (Alan Huang, Leo Cheng, Ryan Leung, and Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.

In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine).

Tutors Leo Cheng and Alan Huang finished lesson 5 with a video to top it off. The lesson was grammar intensive with lots of practice with words frequently combined with expectations. Relative clauses were also taught and practiced. Lastly, a video showing different cultures and their customs were presented with discussion questions for the students.

Ryan went over two part verbs (to turn down, to put away, etc) and how to use them to ask for requests. The students were given fill in the blank questions and asked to make their own sentences using two part verbs. After, the students were taught how to make a question using the simple formula of, “Would you mind + gerund + subject”, and were given comprehension questions. (Example: Would you mind closing the door?) Lastly, two short articles were read and vocabulary in context questions and comprehensions questions were answered after.

Student tutor Jasmine Chen taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s 47th online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutors continued doing a variety of speaking and communication activities with students. Students did a combination of vocabulary (This week, we had an Olympics/ sports themed vocabulary slideshow), storytelling and speaking exercises through customized slides, games, Jamboard speaking prompts and analysis of Olympic events and videos.

The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Alan Huang(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Jasmine Chen(1.5 hours), and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours).
