On May 29th and May 30th, 2021, AYLUS Riverside County member Sophie Chung analyzed and categorized bottom fish imagery taken around the Hawaiian Islands. By carefully studying the different images, she was able to categorize 7 different species of fish which included different types of snapper and grouper. She furthermore measured them from head to tail. With this, she was able to not only assist the NOAA Pacific Island Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) by helping them monitor the stock based on the 3 categories: Abundance, Biology, and Catch but her work also helped gain fishery-independent data for the center.
