Into April, the #Stop Asian Hate movement continues, and it will be until this crime stops!
The Greater Princeton branch of AYLUS (GPA) encouraged members to think about what they heard during the rally event on March 27th in Princeton, and take further stands to talk about it either in writing or by video recording. So here they are:
GPA member Amy Lin (4/1, 2 hrs): The Stop Asian Hate rally on March 27th felt like the first time Asian Americans were getting represented. I feel encouraged to see people of different races being represented, not just Chinese Americans, which are thought of as the “typical Asian American”. There were also Vietnamese and Indian Americans as guest speakers. In the light of incidents involving other races, Asian Americans feel that they are getting thrown into the shadows. The number of hate crimes against Asians has grown since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, not a lot of people know that the Asian Americans stood beside the African-Americans on their march towards freedom, and Asian American history is often excluded from the curriculum, leading some people to request a change in the curriculum.
GPA member Leena Chang (4/1, 2 hrs): Last Saturday’s rally was a very memorable and inspiring experience. The speeches given and poems read really dug deep into my heart. This was the first time I ever took part in any sort of rally, but it was definitely worth going to. Stopping Asian hate is something I am very passionate about and it was very nice to see other people equally as passionate about the topic. Seeing everyone there really moved me and all their support made it all the more great an experience. I look forward to participating in something similar again with all these amazing people.
