The closer it got to March, the more it started to dawn on all of us that it had been almost a year since the initial onset of the lockdown and shutting down of what we knew as “normal.” Many of us students who were a part of Marlboro AYLUS, a student volunteer organization, were struggling to come to terms with this reality and questioning how things had changed so drastically.
Spurred by this, members of the Marlboro branch of AYLUS, which were Haley Deng, Zehra Taqvi, Ayush Bobra, Nikhil Osuri, Emily Luo, Emma Luo, Pratik Jha, and Vatsal Jain, decided to pioneer a contest to reflect on the past year through art. We extended the same questions we had been struggling with to our community and were thrilled by the feedback we received. Students from the ages of 6 to 18 expressed their views on unity, community, and our healthcare heroes through their art. The top ten, from a vote by the community, are being displayed at Ocean Medical Center Hospital. We hope that, despite the ongoing struggle with COVID-19, we can take the time to celebrate our healthcare workers and our community after one year of being united through hardship.
