On 1/31/2021, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung, Alan Huang, Emily Lin, and Greene Xue) taught a ninety-minute English class to new immigrants with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan and Greene), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John and Jasmine).
Reading tutors Emily Lin, Leo Cheng, and Alan Huang finished Unit 3: Making Changes and began Unit 4: Have you ever tried it? They reviewed all tenses and introduced the Present Perfect tense. To make the class more engaged, the tutors used blooket.com, where the students raced to answer the questions about the current topic the quickest.
Greene and Ryan went over the different members of family during class. We read short conversations between two friends who were talking about their family members, we also named members of the family based off of a family tree. Another topic covered was the use of present progressive, or present participle, we had the students follow a format to make sentences with a gerund.(Subject + conjugation of to be + verb with gerund, i.e I am working)
Student tutor John Thach taught the advanced English proficiency course for AYLUS Syosset’s 25th online ESL tutoring class. This class, the third chapter of Cambridge’s 3A, Fifth edition Interchange textbook was completed, where students continued learning how to make indirect requests, decline requests, and give reasoning behind declining requests. Directly following the textbook lesson, “Storytime” was conducted, where students are encouraged to form stories, explanations and develop a strong, creative plot to explain random photos that were provided without context. This storytime included a historical and cultural mini lesson on the history of photography. Following the storytime, the students define certain words picked out of “The Diction of Obscure Sorrows,” a unique database consisting of words that are uncommonly used but are nevertheless interesting and thought provoking. Some words which were covered include “Sonder,” and “Aftersome.” This exercise served multiple purposes, one was to increase the scale of vocabulary of the students and the other was to make them think critically about their life and surroundings. Lastly, a preview was given for the next lesson, where students were encouraged to find a news article they read in the past and which they found to be interesting, in order to bring to the next class where it will be further discussed.
The following 6 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours), Ryan Leung (1.5 hours) , Emily Lin(1.5 hours), and Greene Xue(1.5 hours).
