Phoenix AYLUS Archives Historical Documents in December 2020

The Phoenix branch continues to archive documents for the Citizen Archivist Mission, as part of the Archivist club introduced in late July. This month, volunteers completed a total of 42 documents.

Annie Fitzgerald transcribed 14 documents:  USS Balao, July 1945 – August 1945 pg.26, pg.27, pg. 28,  pg. 29, “WOMEN ANSWER MANPOWER SHORTAGES” pg.1, pg. 2, “WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST” pg. 1, pg. 2, “WIPE THAT GRIN OFF HIS MUG!” “SAFEGUARD TOOLS AND MACHINERY” pg.1. pg.2, “WINGS OVER AMERICA” pg. 1, pg. 2, “WIPE UP SURPLUS OIL” pg. 1, and pg. 2.

“From these documents, I’ve learned about the BALTO war logs during 1945. The documents tracked all the soldier’s movements and actions every day. These transcriptions took me 1 hour. ”

“From these documents, I learned about the different types of war posters during WWII. These posters demonstrate how women overtook jobs traditionally made for men, and how the US government motivated citizens to help out with war efforts. Overall, these 10 transcriptions took an hour. ”

Annie Qin transcribed 3 documents: USS Bashaw, January 1945 – March 1945 pg.9, pg. 13, and pg. 15.

“The document covered the USS Bashaw’s fifth submarine war report during WWII. It’s patrol was marked with timestamps of important observations.”

Wenting Chen transcribed 8 documents: USS Bashaw, May 1944 – July 1944 pg.37, Air Force Award Cards: Rollinson, Harry – Rosenkjar, Duane pg.289, Si pg.25, pg. 101, Voting Rights Act (1) pg.15-16, pg.17-18, pg.19, and City Speech [binder] [3] pg.3.

“I did Air Force Award Cards: Rollinson, Harry – Rosenkjar, Duane pg.289. I learned that their award cards are different than ours today.”

“I did Si pg.101. I found interesting that we still have these cards from the eighteen hundreds.”

“I did Voting Rights Act (1) pg.15-16. I learned that the Voting Rights Act in Texas had good news.”

“I did the Voting Rights Act (1) pg.17-18. I learned that Texas had problems with voting rights and most of them like the new one. So they’re waiting for more Texans to grow used to it.”

Yongfeng Chen transcribed 1 document: USS Pilotfish, May 1944 – July 1944 pg2

Angelina Zhang transcribed 1 document: USS Jeanette, pg 75 left side

“I learned about the effects of weather and wind patterns on velocity on shipments to Herald Island. The log I transcribed also tracked the latitude, longitude, and items shipped. This document took me around 2 hours because of the structure of the charts.”

Jack Xie transcribed 10 documents: USS Bashaw, March 1944 – May 1944 pg. 15, pg. 16, pg. 17,  Norris Dam: Wilson – Young pg. 501, pg. 502, Pickwick Dam: Anderson – Young 1041, 1040, 1039, 1038, and 1037.

“This document was about the actions of a submarine during WWII. It is interesting to see the dangers faced by submarine pilots, as well as the spying that they did.”

“This document was also about submarine patrols during WWII. It was very interesting to learn the different schedules of the crew of the submarine and the type of spying they were doing.”

“This document was also about the patrols of a submarine. The document was mostly eligible, but outlined a battle where they were bombed at sea by enemy aircraft during WWII. ”

“This document is about the approval of an act to remove families from a certain area in Tennessee. It is interesting to see the different costs add up.”

“This document was about the forceful removal of Jim Young from his home to be relocated elsewhere in Tennessee. I find it interesting that the letter does not mention if Young agreed to this move. ”

“This document was about concerns of moving property of a white man’s land. I find it interesting that the report template asked for the mans race. Additionally, I find it intriguing that the man’s wife was described as a traditional housewife.”
“This document was more paperwork on the moving of a farm due to a new bill. It is interesting to see the different options the layout gives, as well as the racism.”
“This document was about the farmland of a man belonging to Mr. Y. Because he has enough status as a white man who is the owner of a large farm, he is able to and thus allowed to sustain himself on the land that can be implied is being taken away.”
“This document contained further documentation of the relocation of a farm owned by a white man named Mr. Young. I think the questions that are being asked are interesting because they ask for his future plans and other options to consider.”
“This document gave further conditions of Mr. and Mr. Young as they are forced to move out of their old farm. The document details that they are both white, but they are both sharecroppers. Because they are forced to relocate, they have trouble finding a new area to farm. It can be inferred that this is an complaint form to the authorities in an attempt to get back land or receive assistance in moving.”
Amy Xie transcribed 5 documents: USS Bashaw, October 1944 – December 1944 Image 44, 45, 47, USS Baya, August 1944 – October 1944 image 2, and 3.
“I transcribed various emails exchanged back and forth about the two submarines. Most of the emails were congratulating the officers and crew on damaging the enemy ship. I believe that these were during WW2, and I thought it was cool to see their plans of attack. In addition, learned where the Baya submarine was created and when it was commissioned. Finally, I learned the process of the making of the submarines, to its testing, and ultimately its use in war.”
