Through the summer months of 2020, AYLUS Pearland organized numerous virtual arts and craft classes through Zoom. Adapting to social distancing orders for Covid-19, thirty elementary and middle school students attended one and a half hour classes held twice a week. In each class, teachers presented a PowerPoint that explained new art topics and gave an assignment corresponding to the lesson. Throughout the past few lessons, students were able to learn about landscape and portrait drawing. Additionally, teachers gave exposure to students about specific drawing techniques used in the works of famous artists such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.
In addition to the slideshow lesson, students were given a new subject to draw each week. In these assignments, students could use new techniques they learned and add their style of creativity to the piece. Students were also able to receive critiques from teachers both in and out of class. During class, students were split into two breakout rooms so that teachers could give drawing demonstrations and individual critiques. Throughout the week, students could finish their assignments and turn in their completed artwork. Then, the teachers gave all students detailed comments and critiques on what they did well and could improve on. Overall, the entirety of the students all had tremendous growth through the few months of them taking classes.
The teacher volunteers were: Kate Liu, Sophia Fu, Faith-Victoria Ni, and Iris Chen.
