Phoenix Branch Archives Historical Documents August 1st-7th 2020

During the first week of August, (8/1/20-8/7/20) the Phoenix branch carries on transcribing historical documents within the archivist volunteer program established in early July. This week, volunteers completed a total of 56 documents and images.

Yongfeng Chen transcribed 29 documents: Alexandria, [Virginia] – 157-38-v.1 [Classification – Civil Unrest] [Counter-Intelligence Measures – Black Panther Party – Counter-Intelligence Program – Black Nationalist-Hate Groups – COINTELPRO – Black Extremists] pg.4, pg.3, pg.7, pg.9, pg.6, pg.8, Documentation for Cases 1605 and 5728 pg55, agriculture land [1 of 3] pg 8, pg 10, pg 12, pg 13, pg 14, pg 16, pg 17, pg 20, pg 21, pg 22, pg 23, pg 24, pg 25, pg 28, pg 29, pg 39, pg 40, pg 41,  pg 42, pg 50, pg 56, and pg 64. 

” I learned the United States Employment Service, was dealing with the recruiting and placing of Negro labor in the United States.”

“I did agriculture land pg 21. I learned that there was in attendance representatives from 19 different cities in Michigan.”

“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] 22 and 23. I learned the Kentucky Council of National Defense was the main
organization in promoting the formation of Negro Workers’ Advisory
Committees in its State.”

“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] pg 24. I learned that reports having been received at the office of the Secretary about disturbance at the stockyards in Chicago and other places of employment where Negroes have ordinarily been engaged, following the race riots in that city, after the departmental conference.”

“I did agriculture 26 and 28. Many evidences of good feeling and cooperation between white and colored workers were manifested.”

I learned he average earnings per hour of 4,260 white men and 2,722 Negro men in 194 occupations in 23 establishments, for six basic industries—foundries, slaughtering and meat packing, automobiles, coke ovens, iron and steel and their products, and glass manufacturing.”

worked per week as white workers in 6 units and the same average earnings per week in 7 units.”

“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] pg 13. I learned that James M. Cox is the governor of Ohio.”
“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] pg 14. I learned that the general topic is” Unity of action in local communities to secure efficiency and cooperation of welfare agencies and methods, by which the Department of Labor and other governmental agencies can best cooperate with private agencies and organizations.”
” I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] pg 16. I learned The Negro workers’ advisory committees organized and held many public meetings, attended by both white and colored citizens, to discuss the problems of labor and the war.”
“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] pg 17. I learned that nearly all of these committees, both State and local, had white and Negro members or had cooperating white members representing organizations of white employers and white workers, in all, 11 State committees and about 225 local county and city committees, with a membership numbering more than 1,000, were appointed.”

I learned that All Special Agent personnel responsible for the investigation of black nationalist, hato-typo organisations and their memberships should be alerted to our counterintelligence interest and each investigative Agent has a responsibility to call to the attention of the counterintelligence coordinator suggestions and possibilities for implementing the program.”

“I did Documentation for Cases 1605 and 5728 pg 55. I learned the state was formed and admitted into the Union subject to their right to remain here.”
Jack Xie transcribed 5 docuemnts: The Director of Naval History Image 301, Image 303, Image 328, Image 330, andImage 329. 
“This document was about the results of a submarine school that was established to help the students learn practical information and drills. The document took me 30 minutes to transcribe. “
“While transcribing this document, I have learned more about the effects of a newly established medical school on pharmacists’ overall effectiveness. This document took me 30 minutes to transcribe.”
“This document was about the importance of Captain Greenwell and his major contributions to the Submarine Awards Corporation. The captain was inducted into the Submarine Roll of Honor. Transcribing this document took me 30 minutes.”
“This document was about awards given to the men who worked in submarines, and it described the effect of different scenarios of award giving on the morale of the soldiers. This document took me 30 minutes to transcribe.”
“This document was a follow up to awards that are given for men in the Navy. It describes how different award presentations can have an effect on morale, and how the rework of the submarine awarding system has improved the system all together. This document took me 30 minutes to transcribe.”
Katherine Shi transcribed one document: Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter v. Walter Danner, Registrar of the University of Georgia, Civil 450. 
“Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter v. Walter Danner, Registrar of the University of Georgia, Civil 450(Images 77-98, 32-37). The documents include emails between Charlayne A. Hunter, who wants to be admitted to the University of Georgia, her mother, and Walter N. Danner, the registrar of the University of Georgia; and the defendants’ answers to the plaintiffs’ complaints. The following attachments are screenshots of the first and last images I transcribed. I spent 4 hours on this transcription. “
Wenting Chen transcribed 13 documents: Documentation from Case 5728 pg.105, pg. 106, pg. 77,pg. 111, pg. 112, pg. 113, Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 115, pg. 122, pg. 123, pg. 124, pg. 125, pg. 126, and pg. 140. 
“I did Documentation from Case 5728 pg.105. I learned that Harry L. Finley is the Clerk of the District Court of the United Stated for the Western District of Oklahoma.”
“I did Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 106. I learned Reverend Hesser is the Foreman of the Grand Jury.”
“I did Documentation from Case 5728. I learned that Ramsey and Hale are going to court.”
“I did Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 111. I learned that Fry had either lied that he knows W. K. Hale or he didn’t, because he said he did know him when they first asked him and the second time he said he didn’t. This is a letter to Roy St. Lewis is asking him to investigate Fry.”
“I did Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 112. I learned that O. R. Luhring is giving some directions to Roy St. Lewis so that he could investigate Fry.”
“I did Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 113. I learned that O. R. Luhring is an Assistant Attorney General.”
“I did Documentation and Statements from Cases 5728 pg. 115. I learned that Ward and Bolton suspect that Hale and Ramsey are up to something.”
“I did Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 122. I learned that Ramsey did kill Henry Roan.”
“I did Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 123. I learned that Agent Murphy had to place a gun against Ramsey and forced him to sign a confession.”
“I did Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 124. I learned that T. W. Boggess is Guthrie, Okla Sheriff.”
“I did Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 125. I learned that Henry Roan’s wife also got some questioning from detectives.”
“I did Documentation and Statements from ase 5728 pg. 126. I learned that Agents are still investigating on what happened during the scene when Henry Roan got killed.”
“I did Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 140. I learned that Agents are also getting information from Dr. Aaron (insurance person).”
Charisse Qin transcribed 2 documents: Case Files of Joseph Brown (1 and 2) 
“I learned that Joseph Brown is in trouble. I also learned who the chief medical officer was.”
“By reading these letters, I learned a lot about the type of language they used to use and the conventions when they wrote letters.”
Amy Xie transcribed 7 docuemnts: Transcript of Record, Volume 4 2701,  2702, Transcript of Record, Volume 3 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1954. 
” I continued to write out what happened in court between the witness (this time Mr. Thompson) and their testimonies. I learned that Mr. Thompson contradicted himself a lot and was found found guilty of fraud as the court had document proof of evidence. Addtionally, this court case follows up the case of the steamship comapany The Black Star Line. It was really intreasting to read through the court proccess and what the witness had to say for himself. In total, it took me about an hour to write out each testimony.”
