As a part of AYLUS relief efforts to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 in Arizona, AYLUS members have been working to sew both cloth face masks and mask covers. Each face mask is made using two sheets of filter paper sewn between two pieces of cloth sewn together at the edges, which makes them more effective than one-piece homemade masks due to the filter paper. Each mask cover is made with two creased clothes sewn together, making them able to fit over both folded and expanded surgical grade face masks in order to reduce wear and tear during work. The masks and covers will be donated along with surgical-grade masks and thank-you cards to hospitals and other essential workers in June or July 2020.
Kerry Zhuo worked 10 hours on the mask covers, including preparing a paper template to work off, and 5 hours on the cloth masks during April 2020. Ethan Wei and Audrey Zhang have also been working to make mask covers.
