Starting from May 25th, AYLUS Pearland members began virtually teaching arts and craft classes. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, traditional classroom lessons have been taught using the Zoom platform. Students attending classes range from grades kindergarten to eighth grade.
Art class teachers hold one and a half hour lessons two times a week. During lessons, teachers present a new topic about the elements, principles, and basics of art. These basic skills are then used to draw reference photos that are provided for the students to choose from. In addition to performing simple elements of art, students are given the freedom to add their own styles and creativity to their drawings.
During class, the 28 students are split into breakout rooms for the chance to better grasp concepts and receive more individual advice. Outside of class, they are encouraged to finish their art pieces. Once done, they have the opportunity to send their drawings to the teachers where they are given comments and critiques.
Classes have been a great space for students to connect with each other as well as express their talented abilities. Additionally, the topics being taught vary weekly. Therefore, students can gain exposure to various art styles and reach out of their comfort zones.
