Amid the “Stay-at-home” law in the Greater Houston area in April, AYLUS Pearland volunteers continued the “Hello Wuhan” project. To accommodate the schedules for both Pearland volunteers and Wuhan students, the tutoring schedule has been finalized to the weekends. Sessions were held on every Friday night, Saturday mornings, and Sunday mornings. The online platform was held on Zoom and the meeting accounts have been donated by AYLUS parents, Mr. Chen and Mr. Liu. After several warm-up lessons and an “Ice-Breakers” event in March, the volunteers and students were more familiar with their classmates. Aside from getting to know each other better, they learned a wide range of English vocabulary, having most of the tutoring sessions follow the materials from “Wordly Wise”. The Wuhan’s students’ age range were from 8 years old to 16 years old. Other than academic topics, the volunteers and Wuhan students often allocate time at the end of the sessions to talk about their common interests. They chatted about their daily lives and hobbies such as gaming, watching movies, traveling, etc. Both students and volunteers enjoyed communicating with each other while learning more about language and culture during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Volunteers include: Andy Gu, Xiaoyu Geng, Michael Meng, Thomas Feng, Kate Liu, Emily She, Mathew Li, Alex Miao, Eric Qi, Sophia Lin, Aaron Wu, Stephen Mao, Iris Chen, Jayden Lu, Baron Niu, Fred Guo, Andy Jiang, Hanna Sang.
