Cobb County Branch ‘Give a Hand’—Marietta Trees Planting on Dec. 14, 2019

East Cobb Branch Give a Hand—Scavenger Hunt at Local Parks

On December 14, 2019, the East Cobb branch of AYLUS went to help maintain and plant trees across multiple parks in the Marietta area. The volunteers headed towards Lewis park where they joined the Marietta Tree Keepers, a non-profit organization that specializes in planting, maintaining, and protecting trees around the Marietta area. The organization has been around for 17 years and plants hundreds of trees in parks every year. This is a scavenger hunt event to find and plant trees in their location. We are the biggest group among those volunteers.

The AYLUS members headed to Merritt park, where 6 cypress trees awaited them. They quickly got to work, immediately beginning to plant two of the trees. Since it had just rained and the Marietta Tree Keepers had machined the soil, it was easy to dig a hole for the trees. However the rain also meant that the weather was cold, wet and windy. Working quickly to avoid the cold, our volunteers planted the tree and piled dirt and mulch around the trees to ensure that rainwater would flow to their roots. With the trees planted, the volunteers helped clean up the site and left for their next site.

The next park was Whitaker park, where a large great myrtle tree awaited them. Working as a team, we quickly planted the tree and removed all labels. Having finished planting the trees, the volunteers were extremely happy that they could help preserve the beauty of their home for others to see.
