The East Cobb Branch holds Academic Tutoring Summer Event to give students an opportunity to learn during the summer. The event hopes to create a smooth transition for students rising to another grade level. The tutoring event not only helps make sure students understand previously learned concepts, but also gives students a preview of what they will learn in the next grade. The tutoring event provides students with a tutoring to work on concepts such as math and reading.
This time, Cynthia Ruan worked with the 2nd grade girl on phonics and arithmetic. The student was provided with summer workbooks in the subjects, so the tutor worked with the student on the concepts from the workbooks such as addition, subtraction, vowels, dictation, etc. On June 11th, the tutor checked the worksheets the students worked on at home and explained the corrections made on them. The tutor also worked with the student on arithmetic problems such as multiplication, division, and counting by 2’s and 5’s. On June 13th, the tutor worked with the students on vowel usage and types of sentences. The tutor explained how to identify interrogative and declarative sentences. The tutor also worked with the student on identifying the subject and predicate in sentences. The tutor also provided lent some books to the student to read for the summer to increase her reading comprehension skills.

The tutoring session also intrigued a mother nearby who was interested in signing up for the tutoring sessions for her son.
