June 3,4,8 2019 East Cobb Branch “Give A Hand” Summer Event V– Book sorting and Selling

During the week of June 3, 4 and 8  2019, 8 members of East Cobb Branch participated in the YMCA Book Sorting and selling Program.

The program’s goal is to sort and sell donated books in preparation for a book fair that is held for the children and parents who live in the Walton Village Apartments. And to use the money from the book sale to be donated to kids in countries who lack education and the leftover books are donated to Seeds of Knowledge. From the book fair, children and adults gain access to a large range of books, including educational, fictional, and non-fictional. Furthermore, the money that is received from the book fair is donated to help the less fortunate in Africa.

On Monday, 7 members went to the Walton Village Apartments Adventure Center and organized about 1000 books.

On Tuesday, 4 members went to the Walton Village Apartments Adventure Center and organized about 1000 books.

Our members participated in the whole process of the program by sorting books according to subject/field (i.e. geography, math, adult fiction, picture book) and by placing the books on display so the children and adults would have easier access to every book.

Since our volunteer group finished sorting the books early, we were asked to help create posters for the children who were attending camp at the adventure center. The posters that were made were very child friendly and colorful, which allowed the children to have fun while learning.

On Saturday, 3 members of East Cobb Branch participated in the YMCA Book Sorting, Selling, and Parade Program.

Members came at 9:00 to sort books. It needed many volunteers to help sort the books into different categories like high school books and middle school books. The members also made signs to indicate where certain books are sold.

The book selling started at 11:00. The Softcover books were 5 cents each and hardcover books were 10 cents each. Since the books are so cheap there were a lot of customers that came to buy books. Members helped count up the cost for each of the customers. Although the parade was cancelled due to rain, many people still came to purchase books. Some customers bought many books, so members helped to carry the books onto their cars.

After all of the customers have left, the members help carry the remaining books onto a truck. The truck will then be sent to the next location for selling.

Despite the stormy day and how wet members got, they were happy to be able to help support a good cause. In addition, seeing the excitement on children’s faces while purchasing books made members feel happy that they were gonna be able to have a educational summer through books.
