Harsimus Veterans Cemetery has much historical significance, stretching as far back as the 1700s, where it was witness to Revolutionary War skirmishes, to the War of 1812, acting as an active bunker. Today, it is the final resting place of many a soldier, from those of the Revolutionary War, to WWII and onward. The cemetery has six acres of land, and is mostly covered by greenery, even at this time of year.
On November 8th, 2018, the Edison Branch of AYLUS’s Xin Chen and Victoria He volunteered at the Harsimus Veterans Cemetery in an event named Earth Keepers in Jersey City, organized by Jersey Cares.
Throughout the morning, the two helped tidy the cemetery by raking leaves. Harsimus Veterans Cemetery is one of the few veterans cemeteries in New Jersey and we are proud to honor the veterans who have fought for us and this country. – Reported by Victoria He
