On July 29th, 2018, 17 members of the East Cobb Young Musicians played 3 hours music for the elderly at 3 different senior centers for a summer farewell performance, as school was just around the corner.
East Cobb Young Musicians went to Alto Senior Living, Sunrise Senior Centers and Heritage at Sandy Plains. Of these senior centers, Alto and Heritage senior centers are new to us. There was a wide variety of instruments including violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, trumpet, and piano.
The performances were made up of both group performances and individual performances. There were two string quartets, several duets, and a septet. Groups played popular music such as Hallelujah, the National Anthem, and Beauty and the Beast.
Because the large participation of our members this time, we had tight scheduling, but our efficient time management resolved our problem. We had back to back performances between three senior centers. Some performers were asked to perform first and leave early to make sure travel between each event did not interfere with playing time. Three groups were created, with two parent drivers to let students go from one event to another. This helped us to stay on time with our scheduled performances.
At the final senior center, it was possible to get more people to perform because performers that had performed in the previous senior centers cut back on some pieces to allow others to perform.
The listeners were impressed at everyone’s choices of music and were glad to hear live music. They proudly applauded for everyone’s hard work and effort put into creating a fun and engaging show. People danced and sang to the music, with the most enjoyment coming from familiar pieces like the national anthem.
