East Cobb Members Taking Care of Kids in Needed Families
On July 3, July 10, and July 11, 2018, members of the East Cobb AYLUS Branch opened their houses to take care of 3 fifth-graders in needy families 2 hours each day.
Alex has two younger sisters. One of them has Downs Syndrome and needs therapy twice a week. During summer break, when his mom, (who herself is handicapped and walking with a crutch) takes his sisters to therapy, Alex has to stay home alone, which makes his mom concerned. When we knew the situation, we volunteered to help during his sister’s therapy hours.
Alex himself has ADHD and is very hyper, so we changed our activities frequently for him. We played chess, competed in Ping-pong, matched in football and basketball, as well as read a book together. During downtime, we taught him how to solve a Rubik’s cube.
Russell just moved from China. His family is trying to learn English. To help him settle down fast and get used to living in America, we taught him English and Math, as the curricula differ between the two nations. Russell also became better friends with Alex as the two often competed against each other in the various games they played.
Charles’s father has been abroad for a long time. His mom, who is in poor health, is taking care of him and his sister, who is four. We took care of him, so his mom can have a break. To teach him Chinese, we taught him how to play the Chinese card game “Legends of the Three Kingdoms”. By explaining details and abilities in Chinese, we were able to help further his understanding of grammar and teach him some new words.
We are glad that we could do something for families in need.
