With the beginning of a new school year, comes the end of a marvelous summer. Throughout this summer, our high school volunteers have been volunteering weekly to teach children in our community how to swim.
Our volunteers are all highly capable swimmers from Pearland Aquatics, Houston Swim Club, Dawson Aquatics, and Pearland Pirates that practice many times a week throughout the year. This event was a great opportunity for our volunteers to display their aquatic prowess and share their experiences with a future generation of swimmers!
We had a total of almost 30 students, whose ages ranged from 6-15 and whose levels ranged from beginners to intermediate swimmers looking for some practice. Throughout the break, each of our volunteers imparted as much knowledge as they could to our students. At the end of the summer, every student was able to confidently swim at a higher level. The parents were all very impressed with their children’s improvements, and we even impressed some of the visitors to the pools. Often times, others that came to the pools asked our volunteers about our organization and praised the instructors and students on their skills. This allowed our volunteers to gain insight on teaching and the satisfaction of helping others succeed in their goals.
Throughout the weeks, we had many opportunities at various neighborhood pools for the students to attend the lessons at a convenient location and time. We also had many eager volunteer instructors to help substitute for other instructors, who had other obligations on their lesson days. All in all, we tried to make the learning and volunteering experience to be as enjoyable as possible.
The 13 coaches are: Tony Liu, Kevin Chen, Jason Jiang, Jenny Yu, Kevin Bai, Hans Wang, Luxin Peng, Benjamin Liang, Micah Yang, Katherine Zhong, Claire Lu, Edward Qi, and Eric Qi.
