On July 10th, 2016, Aylus Pearland went to Galveston to participate for the first time in dragon boat racing.
In a ragtag team of 20 adults and children alike, Aylus Pearland set out onto the Galveston Bay to challenge the more experienced teams. In a series of three races, our members failed to win the 300 meter race against the other teams.
However, they did not give up. In the next two races, Aylus managed to win and end up in third place overall.
While the members had fun competing against the other teams, they learned several important lessons. In team-based activities, teamwork is essential to winning. Without staying in sync, the paddlers would not have been able to create a strong current to propel them forward. Our members’ determination was also tested. In the last stretch of the race, everyone had to persevere and maintain a consistent stroke pattern in order to make it to the end.
All in all, Aylus enjoyed helping make the Texas Dragon Boat Invitational Races a success and would love to do it again.
The participants were: Kevin Chen, Tony Liu, Jason Jiang, William Li, Jerred Chen, David Wang, Hans Wang, Han Lu, Luxin Peng, Kate Liu, Longxiao Luo, and Cindy Li.
