AYLUS – Crochet Class at Huagen Chinese School
Date: Sunday, 10/26/2025
Participants/Volunteers: Winny Wang and Rachel Dai Location: Huagen Chinese School, Gainesville, FL
Project Type: Community Service – Arts & Crafts Education
Activity Description:
Members Winny Wang and Rachel Dai of the Gainesville AYLUS Branch organized its weekly Sunday Crochet Class program at Huagen Chinese School (a community education center located at Oak Hall School each Sunday). Providing free volunteering for Huagen each week, the volunteers hold two one-hour sessions for different groups of students (available for ages 7 & up).
During class, they teach students a variety of crochet techniques, starting from the basics such as chaining and single crochet, then gradually moving on to more advanced stitches like double crochet and magic ring, and then to small creative projects. They demonstrate each step thoroughly, cater to students’ needs individually, and encourage them to explore their creativity through yarn and color combinations.
In addition to technical instruction, their goal is to emphasize patience, focus, and self-expression through crafting. It’s rewarding for them to see students gain confidence as they create their own crochet pieces. They also strive to make the learning environment supportive and fun, fostering a sense of community within the class.

Volunteers:
- Winny Wang = 2 hours (teaching: 1hr × 2 classes)
- Rachel Dai = 2 hours (teaching: 1hr × 2 classes)
Total Volunteer Time: 4 hours
