As Halloween is coming up, the Parks Department at Fort Totten wishes to hold a Pooch Parade for dog owners to show off the costumes of their pets on October 11th, 2025 from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Some members of our branch wanted to help out the Parks Department with this event, making it the 198th event.
Since this is the first time that a Pooch Parade is being hosted, our members worried that there won’t be a lot of people. This is also because of the rain that happened in the morning, making it unsuitable for owners to take their dogs out in their costumes. However, after the rain stopped, we saw some owners with their dogs in their costumes. We were so happy that some still came out after it stopped raining to join in on the fun. During this event, our members help hand out donated apples to people passing by, greet owners with their pets in costumes and tell them about the event as well as asking them if they want to sign up for the judging contest, and hand out poop bags to them. As we waited around for more people to sign up for the contest, our members were given the opportunities to pet the dogs, give them treats, and have them do tricks. One dog that knew a lot of tricks was a Husky Australian Shepard mix called Pebbles. She is five years old and has heterochromia. One of her eyes was brown and the other was half blue half brown. Our members helped in the judging process, voting for the dog they believe has the best costume. The costumes that we saw were so cute. Dogs were dressed up as a superdog, a bumblebee, a butterfly, a hotdog, a skeleton, and one even had a cowboy riding on it. Our members had a hard time choosing who would be first place, second place, and third place. After announcing the winners and handing them the prizes, our members help distribute the remaining popcorn. As some stayed around a bit more, members were able to pet and interact with the dogs more. When the event ended, our members helped clean up and put away the tent.
We would like to thank the Parks Department at Fort Totten Park for inviting us to this event. We would also like to thank the dog owners that attended today’s event as well for giving us a chance to pet their dogs, feed them treats, and have them do tricks. Overall, our members were so excited and happy from the event, wanting to help out again next year.
