On Saturday10/12/24, AYLUS Syosset, at Bethpage Park 12 members of helped to remove invasive plants from the park. Students pulled out Mug Worts and invasive vines that had been causing harm to the native plants. Invasive plants are non-native to the ecosystem with no natural predators, causing their population to rapidly increase in number. This leads to them monopolize the environment’s resources, causing a decrease in native plant biodiversity and disruption of the ecosystem’s food webs. Controlling and removing the invasive plant population is crucial for the health of the ecosystem. Students, wearing gloves, worked hard to remove the invasive plants by pulling them out or by cutting them with hedge shears and scythes. Through this, students learned about the negative effects invasive plants have on the native ecosystem and how to effectively remove these plants.
