The AYLUS Dix Hills Branch volunteers at Planting Fields

Alyus Report: 10/5/2024
On a breezy and calm Saturday morning volunteers from the AYLUS program
went down to Planting Fields Arboretum State Historical Park to help maintain the park.
The volunteers were provided with gloves, along with a numerous amount of tools like
shovels, shears, leaf and garden rakes. The group moved to a new location by the
trails, as in the weeks prior the volunteers finished transforming the previous area. The
task at hand was to get rid of the English ivy covering the ground and wrapping around
the trees. The English ivy was introduced to the parks 50 years ago as a form of ground
cover. However it had grown out of hand and was actually harming the environment
around it. For around 3 hours, AYLUS members worked tirelessly on removing all the
English Ivy that could be seen. The team was so productive, that after the first hour they
were moved over to a second location.
Since members of AYLUS have been coming as often as they can to Planting
Fields Park, locals around the park can enjoy the beauty as the park is kept in its glory.
In the week before, a large number of tours came to the park to stroll around. Many
groups passed by the areas that AYLUS worked on, and commented on how nice it
looked. Thanks to the work of AYLUS volunteers, Planting Fields Arboretum State
Historic Park is still a wonderful place to visit.
