On the evening of Saturday, June 8th, members of the Syosset branch of AYLUS were invited to Caumsett State Park to celebrate the projects that took place in the park over the past year to bring about biodiversity such as plating pollination gardens, planting native species as well as removing invasive species. Members were also educated on the importance of having biodiversity in an ecosystem and celebrated with ice cream and a violin performance afterwards.
Over the past year, native gardens for pollinators were constructed all over the park and as a result, the Baltimore Checker Spot Butterflies (which are an endangered species who was believed to be regionally extinct for decades on Long Island until they were found again in Caumsett Park) population doubled from last year. This was great news for the environment as well as humans because pollinators such as the Baltimore Checker Spot butterflies are required for food crops.
