On 5/19/24, members of AYLUS Syosset volunteered at Sunrise Day Camp’s Planting Day with Duke Alums Engage. First, members aided with planting flowers in the flowerbeds such as marigolds. The group proceeded to help pack supplies in ziploc bags. When Sunrise Day Camp starts, buses pick up kids from all over New York and these bags contain emergency medical supplies including 4 single use purell packets, 4 purell wipes, 2 paper towels, 1 scooper, 1 bottle of fluid solidifier, 2 face masks, 4 nitrile gloves, 1 blue fluid bag, 1 red biohazard bag and 1 pack of Clorox wipes. The bags were filled in a conveyer belt fashion and the complete bags were sealed at placed in large garbage bags. During the process, the group ran out of red biohazard bags and started packing the incomplete bags in a separate location.
Sunrise Day Camp is the world’s first full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, provided completely free of charge. Sunrise accepts campers who are between 3½ and 18 years old, who are on active treatment for cancer or have been treated within the past 5 years, and the sibling(s) of a child who meets this criteria. Unlike most oncology sleep-away camps that are offered for 1-2 weeks each summer, Sunrise Day Camp allows children to attend camp as often as they like.
