On Saturday, Aylus volunteers went to 1 Jones Beach to help protect the habitat of piping plovers. The activity lasted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Many tourists come to the beach to watch the airshow. However, some tourists may become interested in the piping plovers’ habitat while playing on the sand and thus enter the area. The volunteers’ goal is to ensure that no tourists accidentally enter the bird’s habitat—the fenced-off area on the beach. Aylus volunteers arrive at the site at 9 a.m. and, led by instructors, settle down next to the habitat fence. They bring their own beach chairs or blankets and volunteer while watching the airshow of various airplanes and jets. The volunteers are required to stay until the event ends at 4 p.m.
Aylus volunteers have contributed to protect the habitat of piping plovers, while also giving them the opportunity to relax and enjoy the beautiful summer days.
