On Sunday July 5th 2026 volunteers from AYLUS Syosset head on over to Jones Beach for another day of protecting the Piping Plovers. Being one of the most protected endangered bird species of New York, it’s difficult to keep an eye on their nesting spots in extremely populated areas.
Every year, Jones Beach hosts an airshow for visitors to admire after Independence Day. As thousands of families gather on the beach, people are bound to accidentally lose a ball or kite in the same area that the Plover nest. Members from Syosset, Great Neck, and Roslyn made a return to monitor the fenced off area, ensuring that no one would enter at the risk of harming the nests. In the end, everyone got to ensure the airshow, while also keeping Piping Plovers safe!
