Bellaire Branch volunteered at Houston Food Bank on March 12, 2023

The Houston Food Bank is America’s largest food bank in distribution leading hunger relief in 18 southeast Texas counties. This non-profit organization distributes fresh produce, meat and nonperishables and prepares nutritious hot meals for kids and needy families in our state.

The AYLUS Bellaire Branch volunteered at the Houston Food Bank on Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The event was the Senior Box Program, where volunteers gather to provide a monthly box of food to low-income seniors and other eligible individuals.

Volunteers were split into 2 groups.

The first group worked alongside other volunteer organizations to pack cans and bags of food such as oats, beans, soup, corn, chicken, and spaghetti into boxes. We also helped sort trash by disassembling the empty boxes and recycling their plastic wrappings. After completing the final pallet, volunteers helped sweep the floor and count the number of cans that haven’t been packed. During the volunteering time, we packed a total of seven pallets or 315 boxes, which will provide 8243 meals.

The second group was tasked with bagging, sealing, then boxing rice that would then be sent out to families in need. At the end of this shift, 6400 meals/480 boxes/6 pallets of brown rice had been packaged by AYLUS and other volunteers present that day.

Fifteen volunteers participated in this event (3 hours): Yufei Zhang, Victoria Wang, Raymond Han, Helena Wang, Samuel Hu, Julia Hu, Samantha Yu, Valerie Yu, Olivia Bui, Matthew Zong, Lucas Wang, Haoran Xu, Jingai Wu, Bob Feng, and Betty Feng.
