Bellaire tutored elementary school students on February 11, 2023

On the morning of February 11th, volunteers tutored elementary kids at Ed White Elementary school from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Tutors were brought into the 3rd grade classroom and paired up with two students. There were two math worksheets given to each student.

The math sheets focused on coloring in graphs ranging from bar graphs to pictographs. This was important because this content was rumored to appear on the STAAR test for third graders this year. Tutors helped students read graphs, like looking at the key, and figuring out what the numbers on the x- or y-axis meant.

In between worksheets, tutors played educational games with their students. The cart with games included chess, word games, and math flashcards. These fun little breaks allowed students to enjoy learning time without feeling too bored.

After the break, tutors went back to finish the second worksheet. Then around 10:30, they were supposed to switch from math to English content. Some of the students only speak Spanish or Chinese, so tutors had to teach them English. They played word games by showing a word and explaining the definition along with an example of the word in a sentence.

At the event on February 11th (total of 4 hours including 3 hours of tutoring and 1 hour of commute), members that attended were: David Chen, Ellen Dai, Dylan Wang, Victoria Wang
