East Cobb Young Musicians Summer Performance VI

On July 4th, 2018, 15 members from the East Cobb Young Musicians team performed for three and a half hours at local senior centers (Sunrise, Arbor Terrace, and Atria). There were a variety of instruments such as clarinets, trumpets, various string instruments, and pianos. The performers played pieces ranging from classical to contemporary, all which the seniors had enjoyed.

When the musicians arrived, they were greeted by the staff and shown where to unpack and practice. After the stage was set up, they walked out to meet their audience and make self-introductions. An opening and closing statement were given by a student, and the performances followed. Before each piece, the musicians would give a brief description about what they were going play. A majority of the performances were from solos and quartets, with a few duets and a quintet thrown in.

At Sunrise, due to the broken elevator, the group was arranged in the dining room. Although the agenda and performance styles were adjusted, the audience adored the music. The senior residents of Arbor Terrace filled the big activity room, eagerly waiting to hear the performances. When the activity room was full, two quartets were asked to perform at the other side of the building for more residents. The new activities director welcomed the group at Atria’s front door, and took pictures of each musician. All 3 senior homes were beautifully decorated, but Arbor Terrace wore leis of July 4th colors.

Many people came into the hall to listen, including the families of the senior residents, the staff, even a few dogs! With the cheerful music, it felt like a small festival. The end of the performances were met by applause, smiling faces, compliments, and wishes for the young musicians to come back soon. This was a very special Independence Day!
