On 3/19/22, AYLUS Syosset traveled to the Long Island Native Plant Initiative and helped in removing invasive weeds from potted rose plants by pulling the weeds out from the soil. Afterwards, a layer of rice hull was spread over the de-weeded soil and the potted rose plants were put back onto their growing shelves. Through a collaborative effort, around 200 pots were de-weeded, allowing for the roses to grow larger and healthier due to less vegetation sharing the same nutrients in the pot.
The Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) is an all-volunteer cooperative effort of over 30 non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, nursery professionals, and citizens. Their mission is to protect the genetic integrity and heritage of Long Island native plant populations by establishing commercial sources of genetically appropriate local (ecotypic) plant materials for use in nurseries, landscaping, and habitat restoration activities.
