On 5/23/2021, seven members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung, Alan Huang, Emily Lin, and Greene Xue, Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan and Greene), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine). After class, a new tutor, Aika who is a Japanese-American Syosset High School student. It was pleasant to gain an additional helper for the English class.
For Class #37, Leo, Alan, and Emily completed Unit 1 of the Interchange book Level 3, and began Unit 2. Students had a lot of grammar practice, for example, gerund phrases. Linking sounds were also taught to allow the students to speak faster and more natively.
In the intro level class taught by Ryan Leung and Greene Xue, students were taught a lesson about planning events in the future. A new program, peardeck, was used to make the lesson more engaging, allowing students to draw, interact, and answer questions on slideshows. Students started off with a video about planning a party and various types of cheese, complete with video-based questions. Students read several passages that included hypothetical role plays and informational articles on what to do in a situation where you are late. Students also learned about how to use and form the present continuous tense and “be going to”. In addition, students used to tell and ask in formal and informal situations.
Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutors concluded the last few week’s an intermission period from the regular Interchange textbook curriculum; doing a variety of speaking and communication activities with students as an interlude before the second half of the textbook. Students continued practicing their verbal English abilities through storytelling and crafting exercises.
