East Cobb Branch Holds Senior English Tutoring in February, 2021

Emily Sun from the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS participated in the Senior English Tutoring Program and tutored for 3 hours with 1 hour during each session.

This program’s goal is to provide English guidance to the elderly who do not know much English. Volunteers are needed for 1 on 1 tutoring sessions. By helping these elderly improve their English, the goal is to make communication smoother and life easier for them.

The tutoring sessions were done over Zoom. During the sessions, there weren’t any issues encountered. I taught by having a conversation with the elder. If she had any trouble pronouncing a word, I would correct her pronunciation by asking her to spell it out, tell her the correct pronunciation, and explain why the word was pronounced that way. After that, the elder would read out loud sections of magazine and newspaper articles, and I would correct her pronunciation along the way.

I felt that the sessions were successful and there weren’t any issues throughout the sessions. I have noticed many improvements as well. It feels rewarding to help someone improve and gain a friend along the way.

Attendance: Emily Sun (3 hours), Brian Kuang (4 hours), Terrence Yang (1 hour)
