Greater Princeton AYLUS Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 18th, 2021

Monday January 18th, 2021 is the MLK Day. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later.

To honor the MLK Day of Service, members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) worked to clean the Plainsboro Lenape Trail and Turning Basin Park, besides recycling lots of plastic films at the McCaffrey’s in Princeton Shopping Center. GPA members followed social distancing rules to protect people and themselves while cleaning a park. Stay safe, everyone!

Participants: Donna Nagorny (1/18, 3 hrs), Amy Lin (1/18, 1 hr), Olivia Ruofei Mao (1/18, 1 hr).
