On December 20th, 2020, the East Cobb Branch went to laser cut plastic for use in face shields from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Today began normally, but quickly we ran into some issues. When cutting the first set of films, the cuts weren’t quite deep enough, and the shields stayed stuck onto the sheets. This caused a small loss in efficiency as we now had to manually remove the shields, bending the plastic to snap it, or using a knife to cut it. However, this issue would have more consequential issues elsewhere. To continuously use the laser cutter, we would normally have to cut sheets while the laser cutter was cutting a sheet. With the laser cutter failing to cut through the sheets, we now were spending that time separating the shields, so once we had cut all of our stored sheets from last time, our production ground to a halt as we had to stop and cut more sheets. We eventually persisted, choosing to cut many sheets at time and then cut them to maximize the amount of shields we could make today. We would make just under 150 shields today despite the problems we encountered.
