On July 31, 2020, student members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) teamed up and taught kids in the subjects of reading and writing.
The 1.5-hour class offered by GPA members Karen Yang and Kathy Yang teach 5 middle schoolers, Aria, Claire, Victor, Meisu, and Helen, on reading and writing. Class times have changed to Fridays from 2-3:30. This week was about suspenseful writing and the techniques behind it. The kids began with a warm up writing sample by responding to the prompt “Write a descriptive paragraph about an ordinary object but don’t reveal what it is!” Then, we taught them a lesson with Google Slides, videos, readings and examples on how to write suspense effectively with questions, show and not tell techniques, fast and slow paced and cliffhangers. The kids also had time to read a suspenseful mystery, “The Monkey’s Paw” to see this in action. The kids also got to play Kahoot on today’s content that I made and had a lot of fun! We also elaborated on the book talks they have to do next week.
The 1 hour class offered by GPA members Abigail Bao, Angela Bao, and Olivia Mao teach a few elementary school students in Princeton. The students shared the stories they wrote with the members. The members enjoy their fantastic stories while helping them fix grammar.
GPA member Ryan Tian has been teaching English to two younger students for 2 hours every Saturday night starting July 4th. One is in fourth grade while the other one is in sixth grade. He has been mostly helping them with having conversations, but also using books and other material to help them with their grammar (7/4, 2 hrs; 7/11, 2 hrs; 7/18, 2 hrs; 7/25, 2 hrs).
Anthony F Yang did 2 hours of Community Service through the preparation and class of tutoring third graders(Aimee Zhang, Mulan Yang, Nico Fischer, Dayna Li) reading and writing.
