On April 12, 2020, student members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA), Kevin Song and Karen Yang, teamed up and taught 5 kids from West Windsor in the subjects of math.
The 3-hour class offered by GPA members starts with an hour of prep for gathering materials around noon. Then at 3:30-5:30 Karen and Kevin teach Pre-Algebra class. The 5 kids, Kathy, Victor, Claire, Meisu, Claire, are in 5th grade, and being taught Pre-Algebra.
Kids were taught online again, beginning with kids playing a game with “GimKit,” an online software similar to Kahoot. Students were asked to first write questions for themselves on previous content of LCMs and fractions and then were allowed to play the game. The game is based on who “earns” the most money. The game was played for the duration of time because students found the game extremely enjoyable and learned both math content and strategies to invest and multiply exponential amounts of money. Students were also asked whether their homework was too difficult and many said yes, so the amount of homework will be scaled down. Next week we will be online again.
