On Saturday August 17, 2019, The East Cobb Branch of AYLUS hosted 2nd Bakery Sale for fund raising. 4 members and 7 New Bakers attended the event. After the 1st successful bakery sale, we got a many inquiry, peoples love our product, and ask when the next bakery sale will be hosted. Due to expected huge demand, the branch decided to train more bakers at this bakery sale event as well as fund raising.
Starting the day, the teachers, Cynthia and Jun Wen, baked 3 cakes to provide example for the students. Once some students arrived, the teachers began to teach the students basic preparatory tasks while the teachers prepared more advanced materials. These tasks included breaking down beans, kneading dough, and whisking materials together. Once most of these tasks were done, more jobs were assigned to the workers, preparing another batch of these materials, shaping the materials and putting together more of the ingredients. Finally, with the materials prepared, the students directed by the teachers began to assemble the first product.
For about an hour the students had been working with materials to make red bean paste buns and coconut bread, however they couldn’t make a red bean bun yet as they had to first let some of the material rest. Therefore, they began to make the coconut bread. They added coconut shredding and sugar to the prepared dough. The teachers than brought the finished products to ovens and let them bake. Now with this done, they finished the red bean buns by wrapping a ball of the paste with dough and let that bake. While they had been doing this, the teachers had been preparing material for the most complicated food item, the cheesecake. To make this the students would have needed more experience than what they came in with, so that’s why they started with simpler items. Once the red bean buns were done though, it had neared lunch time and a pot of noodles was boiled for everyone to eat during a small lunch break.
After this break, Jonathon Wang joined in the baking. With everyone working together cheesecakes in batches of three were prepared and baked throughout the afternoon. In total, 15 cheesecakes, 48 red bean buns and 48 coconut breads were made. The goods were packaged and picked up at the end of the day. Through the bake sale, students were able to learn what their previous mistakes were while they tried making these goods at home, and they learned some new baking techniques to use in the future. This was a great success and every student greatly learned how to bake so next time we host a bake sale, we know our product will be better than before.
In the event, we raised $190 which will redeem the spending in Annual PVSA Award on Aug 04.
