San Diego Branch Hosted the 261st Online English for the Elderly Program on May 23rd – May 25th, 2025

Reported by Colin Xie

On May 23rd – May 25th, San Diego students of AYLUS participated in the 261st online English for the Elderly activity. The goal of this activity is to help elderly men and women from China learn the basics of English so that they’re able to use them in their daily lives.

Due to current circumstances, English for the Elderly is hosted online, through Zoom video conferences. First, both the elderly and the volunteers joined the main room for attendance. Then, they were organized into several breakout rooms. Greater volunteer participation has allowed lessons to be split into one-on-one sessions, which are more personal and help to build communication skills for both the volunteer tutors and elderly students.

Through this program, AYLUS volunteers were able to teach 11 elderly men and women common English phrases and sentences. Not only were the “students” able to improve their understanding of and ability to speak the English language, but the volunteers also improved their patience and confidence through this event.

The following members participated in the 261st Virtual English for the Elderly activity, 2 volunteer hours for each session:

Friday, May 23rd: Lauren Kan, Sophie Xie

Sunday, May 25th: Alex Backues, Alice Xu, Colin Xie, Emily Chen, Jessica Chen, Katelyn Li, Kenneth Chen, Phoebe Wang
