Oakland Gardens Branch Sort Books for African Library Project Part 1 (05/05/2025)

On May 5th, 2025, from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, our team hosted our 151th event. The AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch has partnered with African Library Project in order to collect books to donate. This is the second year that we have done this, motivated by our success from last year.

African Library Project changes lives, book by book, together with partners in Africa and North American volunteers, to create, improve, and sustain libraries in African communities. Their grassroots approach mobilizes volunteers in North America to collect and donate gently used books and an international network of partners in Africa. They work in English-speaking countries in Sub-Saharan Africa that have a significant need for books with partners who can meet their criteria for sustainable library development. Their book drive approach allows North Americans the ability to share their love for reading by providing books to fellow learners that do not have the same access to children’s books.

After the collection of the books, our team went through the books in order to sort them into appropriate categories for the library. We went through the books to make sure they are lightly used books in alright conditions. Books that are ripped in any way, really crinkled, have writing in them, or damaged through any stains on them are discarded as we wish to provide good quality to the communities in Africa. On top of that, we made sure the books are from levels 3rd grade to 8th grade, even including some textbooks in there to help students with their studies or for anyone to use if interested. We have collected a total of 1,200 books for this cause.

Thank you to our members for all their hard work.
