East Cobb Branch Holds Youth Tutoring Program XXI

The Tutoring programs were held at two libraries, below are the two reports:

  1. At Switzer Library

On March 9, 2019, two members from the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS went to Switzer Library to tutor kids in grades K – 8. The students were helped with reading, writing, and math.  The program occurs every Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 P.M. The program’s goal is to utilize the skills of the members to educate the community they serve.

Kevin and Stanley arrived early to wait for students. They worked with Kindergarteners on how to pronounce sight words, they helped students with multiplication tables and geometry shapes, and read with a 4th-grade student. There were 5 students came to the tutoring program.

  1. At East Cobb Library

On March 9th, 2019, two members of the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS went to East Cobb Library to help tutor children in grades K-12. The tutors help with schoolwork in subjects from math, to science, to language arts. The tutors for this week were Jiarong Wang and Eileen Zhang, both high schoolers from Walton High School.

One of the students that came in for help was a middle schooler named Anna. She wanted help with a school assignment in biology. The assignment was on the carbon cycle, and her assignment was an online interactive game. Going through the activity, the tutor helped clarify parts of the explanations to help Anna learn the content. Afterward, the tutor helped solidify the information by using media to explain the carbon cycle using different means. Then the tutor administered a quick verbal test to confirm that the student had learned the information.

Since the tutors were also students that learned the same content as the students that came in for tutoring, the tutors were able to understand and help with some of the struggles the student had and explain it better and in an easier to understand manner.

Tutoring sessions are held every week on Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon. Sessions are half an hour each, and all students in elementary school and middle school are welcome to come in to receive tutoring. The tutors are high schoolers that are members of the East Cobb branch of AYLUS. They tutor in mostly math and reading, but students can come in with work from other subjects as well.

Attendance: Kevin Shen (2 hours); Stanley Lu (2 hours); Jiarong Wang (2 hours); Eileen Zhang (2 hours)
