On January 26, 2019, the East Cobb Branch of
Our tutors were paired one-on-one with each of the students, so kids were able to have direct conversations. We wanted the students to share the homework they were having trouble on. The tutors read with the students and walk them through the steps of solving problems. They encourage the students and socialize with them while going over incorrect answers on tests, homework sheets, workbook pages, or reading passages.
Members Nick and Rachel were assigned to help kids K-8 with any questions they have from school at Switzer Library today.
Promptly at 2:30, Andrew and his mother came in with a sheet of words for him to practice writing letters and spelling out numbers and colors. Since there was only one child at the moment, Nick checked in with Mr. James and went out to sort books back onto their shelves. Rachel worked with Andrew to help him correctly trace the letters, as his mother worked nearby to keep him focused. He knew the words well and was able to spell them out with ease. When Andrew finished with his session, he and his mother happily went downstairs to check out the children’s department, while Rachel walked to the front desk for her next assignment.
Right as Nick finished his last cart of books, a 4th grader from Kingcaid came in for a tutoring session. He has been to our East Cobb Youth Tutoring before and comments on how the program helped build his confidence. Nick worked with him on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and simplifying. He was smart, as well as a happy and enthusiastic learner. Their session ended thirty minutes before the library closed.
The tutoring session is held on Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon every week by the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS. Tutors are high school students that are part of the branch. Sessions are held at East Cobb Library are open to all students in elementary and middle school.
