Aylus Great Neck Branch Volunteer at Bethpage State Park Playground on 9/28/24
On Saturday, September 28th, 2024, at 9:00 AM, Aylus Great Neck organization headed to Bethpage State Park Playground to participate in the last week of the Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz Campaign.
Our objective here today is to gather local data about the pollinators at this National Park. Trying to take pictures of all different types of pollinators at this park: bees, wasp, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, and birds. These photos will then be uploaded on an app called iNaturalist. The images will be uploaded on Naturalist where the researchers and scientists will then be able to look through and further identify the species of pollinators and gather information.
Due to the unfortunate weather condition of hard rain and humidity today, the insects remained inactive as compared to sunnier days due to hiding from the rain so we weren’t able to find as many as we would’ve otherwise. However, we still found some amazing discoveries. There were abundance of sleeping bumble bees hiding from the rain. Additionally, other insects hide beneath leaves and under them to avoid rain. Then each volunteer would upload the images on the app to be identified by scientists.
