On Saturday August 24th, 2024, AYLUS members volunteered at Bethpage State Park from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The target area was a pathway in the back of Northside Elementary School. Removing weeds and planting seeds were the primary objectives of this activity.
Once everyone arrived, volunteers diligently went to work. Invasive plants, such as spider wort, were removed and dumped in large buckets. Additionally, invasive grass that was growing onto the pathway was removed. Upon filling up buckets with weeds, the weeds were dumped into a truck and sent away.
Another task was to pick enchanted nightshade seeds from the plant. The seed often stuck onto other organisms so they can get spread around. We planted the seeds that we picked to another area since they are natives which is good for the environment.
The work done at Bethpage State Park was productive and significant. Invasive species destroy the biodiversity in the environment. If they are not removed in time and are enabled to reproduce smoothly, they will not only deprive other plant species of their ability to survive, but will also lead to a decrease in biodiversity. This leads to even cause irreversible negative impacts on the biosphere of the area. Volunteers enjoyed doing this event and making a meaningful contribution to the environment.
