On July 15th, 7:00pm-9:00pm, the Great Neck Branch organized and participated in a delightful ice cream social event held at Caumsett State Park. The occasion was not only a chance for community members to indulge in delicious ice cream treats but also a celebration of the remarkable success in breeding native butterflies at the park.
Caumsett State Park, located in Long Island, is home to the exclusive breeding spot of the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly, a threatened species. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of volunteers, the butterfly population has experienced a significant boost over the past year. With the help of these passionate individuals, the population has flourished from 1,410 adult butterflies to an impressive 1,623.
Volunteers played a crucial role in this achievement by planting specific plants that caterpillars and adult butterflies rely on for sustenance. White plantains and turtleheads, which are favored food sources for butterflies, were carefully introduced into the park’s ecosystem. These efforts have greatly contributed to the improved survival and breeding rates of the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly.
The event not only recognized the conservation success but also served as an opportunity to appreciate the park’s scenic beauty. Despite the unfortunate occurrence of rain, the overall experience was highly enjoyable and memorable. Attendees were grateful for the event, expressing their delight in savoring the delicious ice cream amidst the picturesque surroundings.
